Attention is a limited commodity. In fact it is one of the most scarce, and most precious, resources on this planet. Our senses are exposed to many million “bits” of information every day; heat, sounds, tastes, colours, smells. But when you think of it, we’re really not aware of most of those experiences. The process of shifting that information into your conscious awareness is undertaken through what is called the “attention bottleneck”. It is estimated that less than 0.001% of this information reaches consciousness. For the rest of it, we are as blind to it as if it was never [...]

We are taking a break over the Christmas period. Martina has left for her yearly European adventures, Susan is on her way north to celebrate with family and friends and Louise is spending quality time at home with family and taking some extra time to prepare her daughter for her first year of school.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be having some screen free downtime so you may hear less from us but you and your families will be in our thoughts. Thank you for a wonderful year and please accept our greatest wish for you this [...]

A few weeks ago we put the word out asking people to recommend mind gardening books for kids. These are books that encourage children to adopt healthy strategies of mind, to cultivate good quality attention, and to build positive mindsets for life. So here is the list of books you recommended to us. We have not edited the list in any way, just added all recommendations. And the list is in no particular order, except for putting Aussie authors at the top!! This might make your Christmas shopping task a little bit easier. Dancing: the new mindfulness practice!

    dance

Today we had our Christmas break up and in true Mind Gardener fashion we chose an activity where we could come together and practise mindfulness. You may remember that last year we tried our hand at horse whispering – moving horses around a paddock (and then a ring) using nothing but our body and energy. This year we tried our hand at dancing. Yep dancing! And not the type you’d find at other Christmas parties after too many champagnes. We tried Nia. Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that’s based on the science of The Body’s Way. Think meditation, mixed [...]

December 3, 2012 By Susan Pearse 1 Comment

The Christmas festivities have begun! We have all individually posted 12 things we are greatly for in 2012 and we decided to do this exercise for Mind Gardener also.  We have put our 12 things into this video.  The video also tells you how you can give a meaningful gift this Christmas, get free postage (by entering coupon XMAS) and provide a meal for the homeless. We would like to thank you for being part of our community in 2012 and wish you all the best for this festive season!

2012 has been a year that I think I will remember always. I am grateful for so many things but here is a start with my 12 things for 2012: 1. My children giving me the excuse to dress up on halloween, dance in the kitchen and play Marco Polo in the pool. 2. My first (and adorable) nephew Darcy and the opportunity to welcome him into the world. 3. Starting an exercise regime at the start of the year that I am still doing at the end of the year. 4. The gorgeous ocean and all of nature’s wonders. [...]

I love being reminded to be grateful; thank you for another brilliant idea Martina. When I stopped to reflect for this article there were so many things to be grateful for, but a few really stand out in 2012. My grandmother Peggy Healy (pictured with my sister).  She died in July this year, aged 93, in the same way she had lived – with grace, humour, dignity and a kind word for each of her 5 children, their partners, and 24 grandchildren. How grateful I am to have had her in my life for so long; a truly great lady. Speaking [...]

As 2012 comes to a close, we thought we would share with you the 12 things we are grateful for in 2012. What you focus on grows, and gratitude trains our brain to focus on the wonderful things that happen in life, no matter how difficult your circumstances. These are not particularly the things related to our business life, but just those personal moments that stand out. These are mine, and Susan and Louise will share their’s in coming days too. The first few days of Spring when there is a certain type of warmth in the sun and it [...]
